Book #14: Instructions for Dancing, Nicola Yoon

Image
Synopsis:  Evie Thomas doesn’t believe in love anymore. Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began . . . and how it will end. After all, even the greatest love stories end with a broken heart, eventually. As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. His philosophy is to say yes to everything–including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he’s only just met. Falling for X is definitely not what Evie had in mind. If her visions of heartbreak have taught her anything, it’s that no one escapes love unscathed. But as she and X dance around and toward each other, Evie is forced to question all she thought she knew about life and love. In the end, is love worth the risk? Q&A with Ni...

Nicola Yoon's Instructions For Dancing Interview

Image
Where did the idea for  Instructions for Dancing   come from? NICOLA YOON:  My mom has been very sick since 2017. The  Everything, Everything  movie came out, my mom was in the hospital the night of the premiere, and she's been wildly sick up and down since then, so this book a little bit came out of that. The question I was trying to figure out was: You love people and you love them so intensely and we're going to lose them, and do you still want to take that chance? Do you still want to keep loving people, is it worth it? It's one of the questions I always ask myself. You can't help but loving people but what if you could? [ Laughs ] Would you choose to love anyway? What's the saying, it's better to have loved than lost than never to have loved at all. Well, I don't know about that. [ Laughs ] That's really where it comes from, and then I had this idea of: If a person can see the end of all relationships, what does it mean for their own?  So how does t...

Instructions for Dancing Book Review

Image
Instructions For Dancing By Nicola Yoon Nicola Yoon’s third novel is an enticing blend of YA drama, romance and magic. It totally captivated me and I’m not particularly drawn to YA books. Evie Thomas doesn't believe in love anymore. Her parents have divorced following her Father’s affair. She feels disconnected from her Mother and younger sister because they act as is if nothing has happened. After a random meeting with a mysterious woman Evie discovers she suddenly has the power to see the outcome of romantic relationships all around her. Understandably rattled she sets out to unravel this newly acquired strange power. Her journey brings her to La Brea Dance Studio learning the Waltz,Fox Trot and Argentine Tango with a boy named X. He is the polar opposite of Evie; open to adventure, passion, saying yes to all of life’s opportunities and possibilities. Their growing involvement and love forces Evie to face all of her fears and her magical powers head on. I found this book captivat...

Q&A with May Cobb of Hunting Wives

Image
Spoilers ahead - so don't read if you've not finished.  Can you elaborate more about your mother and your inspiration and why you reversed it and had the women create this hunting club? Do you think we’re more judgmental of unlikeable “mom’s” then unlikeable “dad’s”?   I wanted to upend the notion of a boy's club and give women the space to behave badly. And yes, we are SO much more judgemental of unlikeable mom's then dad's!! We want to know more about the relationship with Erin and Sophie. Did anything more happen with them in high school? She was so forgiving of canceled plans and such and then all of the sudden she was just done with her. Why wasn’t Erin in the group of the hunting wives? Any reason she was particularly excluded? Did she exclude herself or did they exclude her?     I feel like Erin just wasn't glamourous enough to be a part of the hunting wives. I mean that from Margot and co's perspective (I loved Erin myself and thought she was the san...

Blind Date with a Book

Image
So during my browsing on Etsy I noticed a listing...Blind Date with a Book. A mystery book beautifully wrapped and decorated in craft paper. When I say these were beautiful...they were dressed up in old book pages, letters, book marks...some of them even included a sachet of tea or a crystal. Let me explain. You choose your book genre (or ask to be surprised) and the seller will send you the surprise book. They are usually gently used which makes me love them even more.  I get in the habit of always choosing a psychological thriller again and again. Why not have someone choose a book for me? I immediately ordered 5 books (naturally). The first beautifully wrapped book to arrive was a WWII historical fiction and happened to be an old library book. I had never heard of the author so I was happy to dive in!  The second arrival was a paranormal romance novel. I was thinking it would be a young adult book, perhaps about teen falling in love with a ghost. How cute would that be? I w...

Book #12 : The Hunting Wives, May Cobb

Image
We were so honored and excited to have May Cobb with us today for the discussion of The Hunting Wives.  The Hunting Wives share more than target practice, martinis, and bad behavior in this novel of obsession, seduction, and murder. Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she’s feeling bored and restless. Then she meets Margot Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margot and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As Sophie’s curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers. When th...

Karen Dionne of The Wicked Sister Join's Shelf Indulgence Book Club - Meeting Recap

Image
Lions, and tigers, and bears. Oh, my! Well, actually, just bears.   Karen Dionne showed up at our discussion of her book, The Wicked Sister, with an entire semester of how a writer is inspired. Somehow, she managed to squeeze all this information into less than 90 minutes.   Included in her informative presentation, if you’re going to write about bears, hold an adorable bear cub. Then, try to talk black bear rescue expert Dean Oswald into letting you behind the fenced area with the adult bears. (As persuasive as we know Karen can be, she failed at this request).   The result of this research? Well, you’ll need to read the book. I will tell you, empathy with animals is a major theme in Dionne’s psychological thrillers. Special thanks to Natalie (like the author, a Michigan girl) for her insight into how Rachel’s interior conservations with animals show how a vulnerable person gains strength and clarity through bonding with the inhabitants of our natural world.   Haven...
