Gilly Macmillan joins SIBC to discuss The Long Weekend

  The best book club discussions can’t be planned. They just have to spontaneously unfold, often with some very entertaining digressions. Author Gilly Macmillan joined us to discuss her most recent book, The Long Weekend. And, sure, we covered her very intriguing story - a very modern and creative tale inspired by that wonderful old movie, A Letter to Three Wives. But we also wandered off the path, leading to an equally lively discussion. Heather asked Gilly if she was inspired by the historical long barrows (of the Neolithic Period) in reference to a planned ritual for one of her characters. This led to Gilly recounting her rather spooky experience at the West Kennett Long Barrow in Avebury. Not surprising, but authors often have the best stories. They don’t all make it into their books. Also, if you’re a Vera fan, (British TV series - and if you’re not a fan, you should be) The Long Weekend takes place in Northern England, Vera’s stomping ground. ((Literally - she stomps)
