Our 2020 Book Club Favorite Books

Image
The votes are in from the Shelf Indulgence Book Club for 2020. These were our favorite books of the fourteen that we read and discussed together. If you haven’t read them, check our top four. We highly recommend them:  1. He Started It,  by Samantha Downing: Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven't all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we'll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.   But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.   It's even harder when you're all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory, a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won't stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there's a body in the trunk. Just to name a few

Book #14 : Darling Rose Gold, Stephanie Wrobel

About the book:   Mothers never forget. Daughters never forgive.   For the first eighteen years of her life, Rose Gold Watts believed she was seriously ill. She was allergic to everything, used a wheelchair and practically lived at the hospital. Neighbors did all they could, holding fundraisers and offering shoulders to cry on, but no matter how many doctors, tests, or surgeries, no one could figure out what was wrong with Rose Gold. Turns out her mom, Patty Watts, was just a really good liar. After serving five years in prison, Patty gets out with nowhere to go and begs her daughter to take her in. The entire community is shocked when Rose Gold says yes. Patty insists all she wants is to reconcile their differences. She says she’s forgiven Rose Gold for turning her in and testifying against her. But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty Watts always settles a score. Unfortunately for Patty, Rose Gold is no longer her weak little darling… And she’s waited such a long time for her mother

I thought you would never ask!  5. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom - I borrowed this book from a coworker to read last February for black history month. This book is set in the late 1790's and is about slavery in the south, strength, and family secrets. Needless to say this story was thought provoking and eye opening.  4. Julie and Julia by Julie Powel l- Lets be honest...who doesn't love a book about french cuisine? This book is like a comfort food to me. I come back time and time again to warm my soul like...like a cup of Julia Child's french onion soup dare I say?

Darling Rose Gold Book Review

Image
Mother vs Daughter. Crazy vs Crazier. Who will win in the end?  Darling Rose Gold is a psychological thriller about an extremely dark and twisted mother-daughter relationship.  5 years ago, 23-year-old Rose Gold Watt’s mother, Patty, was convicted for aggravated child abuse. Patty, who has Munchausen by Proxy, abused her daughter for years. Under her mother’s care, Rose Gold became violently ill, suffering from malnutrition and a host of other ailments as a result of her mother's abuse.  Patty served 5 years in prison, and with her release date looming, Rose Gold wants to reconcile. However, Rose Gold’s suffering has taken its toll. While she has recovered physically, mentally she is far from healed. Mother and daughter seem to try to repair their relationship, but underneath the surface of their reconciliation, they are playing an underhanded game of cat and mouse which results in pure insanity! I found the subject matter of this book to be fascinating--I couldn’t put it down! It

Here goes - my 5 selections for personally memorable books.   Cathedral by Raymond Carver: this collection of short stories is perfection. The  story “A Small Good Thing.” might be the best short story ever written,. No  wonder so many other writers mention Carver as an inspiration, as well as  numerous musicians, including John Prime and Lorde.   The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen: Books that skewer middle class values  usually get a good reception. And this novel, about an elderly Midwestern couple  and their three adult children, definitely resonated with this former Midwesterner.  Franzen has a truly wicked s

Book #13 : Single, K.L. Slater

About the book: ‘I keep feeling like I’m being watched – dropping the boys off at school, choosing wine at the supermarket – but when I turn around there’s nobody there…’ When single mother Darcy’s son falls from a rope bridge at a local playground, life stands still. She clutches his small, limp body, frozen, until a pair of strong hands push her aside, and she watches as George, a local doctor, saves her son’s life. George is a single parent too, and with his twinkling hazel eyes, easy charm, and lack of wedding band is almost too good to be true, but coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes dinner, and soon they can’t go an evening without seeing each other. When he invites her to move into his beautiful home with its sprawling garden for her boys, Darcy doesn’t hesitate. But as Darcy is settling in, she receives a bunch of flowers with a chilling message. George says they’re from an obsessed ex-girlfriend, Opal, and days later Opal turns up at Darcy’s son’s football match. She claims t

It’s a love story, a fantasy, a mystery and a novel of self discovery. It defies a box to fit neatly in but I could not stop reading! 2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: ( I read the full Millennium Trilogy) This is the first in the series by Swedish author Stieg Larson. He created a strong, brilliant character in Lisbeth Salander. Followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest. This definitely fits in the psychological thriller, crime fiction genre. I loved three written by Larson and published posthumously.

I can assure you outside of the first two, it was incredibly challenging. But each one of these books as stuck with me in so many ways. Be it a love story, I could never shake…A thriller, I couldn’t put down….Life lessons, I can’t get enough of…or a story told by a dog, these books are my books. They are my top five favorites.  Tuesday’s with Morrie, Mitch Albom: It chronicles a man named Morrie Schwartz in the last days of his life, and while it is about the acceptance and inevitability of death and grief, it is almost more about living and getting the
