Book # 10: You Are Not Alone, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Image
About the book: The electrifying #1 New York Times bestselling authors of THE WIFE BETWEEN US and AN ANONYMOUS GIRL return with a brand new novel of psychological suspense, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Shay Miller wants to find love, but it eludes her. She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end. She wants to belong, but her life is increasingly lonely. Until Shay meets the Moore sisters. Cassandra and Jane live a life of glamorous perfection, and always get what they desire. When they invite Shay into their circle, everything seems to get better.  Shay would die for them to like her.  She may have to. Discussion Questions: 1. How does data shape Shay’s world and how does she process it? Does her data journal ultimately serve a higher purpose? Did you find Shay’s data entries helped set up key moments in the story? Which data nuggets did you find particularly interesting or surprising?   2. Discuss how the Moore sisters came to infiltrate the lives of Stacey, Daphne, Beth, and Amanda. H

A Conversation with the Authors: Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, You Are Not Alone

I got to take a deep dive in with the  publishers and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen as we learned a little bit more about You Are Not Alone and their history together. Enjoy -  How do you both approach the process of writing a new  book? How do you prepare separately and then together  collaborate to integrate your ideas? Or is there a magic  formula to working together? We are both psychologically-minded and inquisitive,  and we spend hours every day brainstorming potential  characters and plotlines. When we’re gearing up to  write, we fill our minds with storytelling: We read a  lot (books, newspapers, magazines, and screenplays).  We try to stay on top of the new television shows and  movies, and we also love audiobooks and podcasts.  We enjoy deconstructing what makes different creative  projects work--the ingredients that compose compelling,  unforgettable stories. We also love trying to figure out  what makes people tick, and we share our observations  with each other. Throu

Emily Bleeker of What's Left Unsaid Join's Shelf Indulgence Book Club - Meeting Recap

Image
People who aren’t in book clubs might have some misconceptions. Like, the discussions are stilted, forced recitations of people attempting to out intellectualize each other. Or, the book club members never actually read the book or discuss the book. But they do drink wine and eat delicious snacks.   Well, not our book club. We’re not stuffy. We do read the books. And, the wine and snacks are at a minimum because we often are lucky enough to have the author with us. (Thanks, Brittany). So, we’re too busy asking questions for those snacks.   We certainly were fortunate this past Sunday, June 6th, to have the effervescent Emily Bleeker, author of our selection What’s Left Unsaid, in our Zoom book club room.   What a treat. As Amy pointed out, Emily Bleeker really made us coconspirators with her protagonist as we joined her on her riveting search into a family mystery from another era.   Bleeker emphasized how much her book was about the setting. So how do you get the logistics correct w

Book #9: What’s Left Unsaid, Emily Bleeker

We were lucky enough as a book club to get advance copies of this book. We were able to read, meet with the author and discuss just how wonderful this book really was. It was an honor that Emily picked us as a first time book club to do something like this with.  About the book:   After a series of devastating losses, Chicago journalist Hannah Williamson has landed in Senatobia, Mississippi, to care for her bedridden grandmother and endure grunt work at a small newspaper. But in cleaning out its archives, Hannah discovers a compelling distraction from her life: a series of rejected articles from the 1930s that illuminate a long-hidden mystery. The articles, penned by a young woman named Evelyn, are haunting accounts of first love, trauma, and surviving a mysterious shooting that left Evelyn paralyzed at the age of fourteen. The articles stir up more questions than answers, and Hannah becomes consumed by what’s left unsaid. Encouraged by Guy Franklin, a local middle school teacher, Hann
