Our next member's Five Favorites is from Bailey D.
My top 5 favorite books of all time? I thought you would never ask!
5. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom- I borrowed this book from a coworker to read last February for black history month. This book is set in the late 1790's and is about slavery in the south, strength, and family secrets. Needless to say this story was thought provoking and eye opening.
4. Julie and Julia by Julie Powell- Lets be honest...who doesn't love a book about french cuisine? This book is like a comfort food to me. I come back time and time again to warm my soul like...like a cup of Julia Child's french onion soup dare I say?
3. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert- This memoir CHANGED MY LIFE. In 2012 I was 20 years old and on a trip to California. I had purchased this book to read on the trip and wasn't expecting it to impact me the way it did. While reading I began to realize that I didn't want to be in a comfortable relationship. I needed to be pushed and challenged to be the best version of myself. When I returned home from my trip I ended my 3 year relationship with my boyfriend. Thank you, Elizabeth Gilbert! This is another book I'll re-read if I feel stuck or need some inspiration. Also...the way Gilbert described food in Italy? I love this woman!
2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rolling- I actually read the Harry Potter series for the first time as an adult. I finally understood what the fuss was about. Hi, I'm Bailey and I'm a Gryffindor. In the weeks leading up to my wedding in 2015 I was a hot mess. There may or may not have been an unfortunate moment involving me locking myself in a closet, eating Chinese food and bawling on the phone to my soon to be husband. I needed to escape the stress. This is when I met my good friend Harry. I flew through the first book, then the second and third. The night before my wedding my sister, best friend and I watched as many Harry Potter movies that we could fit in. Harry Potter always brings me back to this special time and I cherish the memory.
1. Coraline by Neil Gaiman- Coraline was gifted to me when I was in 5th grade by my cool, fellow scorpio aunt. Hands down my all time favorite book. I have re-read it in middle school, high school , as an adult and it never gets old. What a lovely, spooky tale about a little door to an alternate universe...I love it. The buttons for eyes, the other mother, the black cat...I love all of it!
