Gilly Macmillan joins SIBC to discuss The Long Weekend

The best book club discussions can’t be planned. They just have to spontaneously

unfold, often with some very entertaining digressions. Author Gilly Macmillan

joined us to discuss her most recent book, The Long Weekend. And, sure, we

covered her very intriguing story - a very modern and creative tale inspired by that

wonderful old movie, A Letter to Three Wives. But we also wandered off the path,

leading to an equally lively discussion. Heather asked Gilly if she was inspired by

the historical long barrows (of the Neolithic Period) in reference to a planned ritual

for one of her characters. This led to Gilly recounting her rather spooky

experience at the West Kennett Long Barrow in Avebury. Not surprising, but

authors often have the best stories. They don’t all make it into their books.

Also, if you’re a Vera fan, (British TV series - and if you’re not a fan, you should be)

The Long Weekend takes place in Northern England, Vera’s stomping ground.

((Literally - she stomps) Though I’m not even sure the intrepid Chief Inspector

Vera Stanhope could solve Gilly’s twisty tale. There are several suspects. You will

be kept guessing.

People sometimes ask book club members “Do you really discuss the books?”

Well, yes. Our book club does. But we also are open to the inspiration of where the

book takes us. Gilly Macmillan writes with that magical relationship between

author and readers in mind. We were fortunate to have her spend some time with

us.
