Karen Dionne of The Wicked Sister Join's Shelf Indulgence Book Club - Meeting Recap

Image
Lions, and tigers, and bears. Oh, my! Well, actually, just bears.   Karen Dionne showed up at our discussion of her book, The Wicked Sister, with an entire semester of how a writer is inspired. Somehow, she managed to squeeze all this information into less than 90 minutes.   Included in her informative presentation, if you’re going to write about bears, hold an adorable bear cub. Then, try to talk black bear rescue expert Dean Oswald into letting you behind the fenced area with the adult bears. (As persuasive as we know Karen can be, she failed at this request).   The result of this research? Well, you’ll need to read the book. I will tell you, empathy with animals is a major theme in Dionne’s psychological thrillers. Special thanks to Natalie (like the author, a Michigan girl) for her insight into how Rachel’s interior conservations with animals show how a vulnerable person gains strength and clarity through bonding with the inhabitants of our natural world.   Haven...

Tomb of The Queen Book Review

Image
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little skeptical when someone recommends a fantasy novel for me to read.  Don’t get me wrong, it has absolutely nothing to do with the genre itself; I LOVE a good fantasy novel.  What I’ve found, however, is that the books are either too ‘high fantasy’ (think lots of stuff involving elves and fairies), or too similar to other books. Most of them I would classify as fun reads, but not often ones I’d recommend to others.  I’ll be the first to (proudly) admit that I am a huge Harry Potter nerd, and there are plenty of other books that try to imitate them, and don’t do a good job.  So when this one was given to me to read, I was excited for a good read, but had my doubts as to whether or not it would fill the void that Harry, Ron, and Hermione left in my life.  I was ready to give it a go, and since it is Summer Break, I found that I had the time to get lost in a new realm.   And then...it happened. I got sucked in....

How grateful we were today to have Karen Dionne join Shelf Indulgence Book cLub's discussion of The Wicked Sister!! Two generations of sisters. An unthinkable crime. A secret that could ruin a family.  For a decade and a half, Rachel Cunningham has chosen to lock herself away in a psychiatric facility, tortured by gaps in her memory and the certainty that she is responsible for her parents’ deaths. But when she learns new details about their murders, Rachel returns to the place where she once felt safest in a quest for answers: her family’s sprawling log cabin in the remote forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. As Rachel begins to uncover what really happened on the day her parents were murdered, she learns that home can be a place of unspeakable evil, and that the bond she shares with her sister might be the most poisonous of all. Book #10: The Marriage, K.L. Slater

Image
Summary:  Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband. The man who killed my son.  My friends and family can’t understand it. My neighbours whisper in the street whenever I walk past. How can I love a man like Tom? They don’t really know me at all… The most unputdownable psychological thriller you’ll read this year from the bestselling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Wife Between Us or Gone Girl, you’ll be totally hooked on The Marriage. Discussion ...

Author Marieke Nijkamp on the Harrowing Research Behind This is Where it Ends, Diverse Books, and Writing America From Outside

Image
Q& A Credit:  Dahlia Adler Fifty-four minutes. One school shooting told in real time. If Marieke Nijkamp’s debut sounds both intense and terrifying, you don’t know the half of it. But it’s an incredibly important read that’s all too relevant in America right now. On a personal note, this is a hugely exciting release to me, as Marieke’s been my critique partner for going on four years, and I could not be prouder of her debut.  This is Where it Ends  has been in my life and my heart for years, and I’m so excited to see it finally available to the world. For a sneak peek behind the book and into the brain of its author, we’ve got Marieke Nijkamp herself. This is Where it Ends  is written from four different perspectives. How did you choose who would get a voice in the story, and was one easier to write than the others? I knew early on I wanted  This is Where it Ends  to tell the story of the people at the heart of a shooting, to explore the diffe...
